It might be unseemly to hope for tons of property destruction, but the fact is that whether they hope for it or not, it won?t change the outcome. And in those cases where there is a lot of property damage ? as it looks like will be the case with Hurricane Sandy ? it?s worth looking at trading opportunities, particularly in stocks that also make for good long-term investments.
Insurers are the first area to look at. A huge storm can put a dent in an insurer?s near-term earnings, but that should be viewed as a buying opportunity after the stock drops from weak holders. Insurance is a great business. If it weren?t, the free market would?ve killed it ages ago. Underwriting is now so nuanced and refined that insurers know more about risk than you ever could.
Berkshire Hathaway?(NYSE:BRK.B) is the obvious big play, and you get the diversification of Warren Buffett?s holding company to boot. As a conglomerate, trading at 16 times earnings is not a bad deal at all. Berkshire?s insurance underwriting business actually lost $830 million in the first half of last year, and it presently sits on a $675 million profit. It?s hard to say how exposed it?ll be here, but this is a long-term hold, so if you are considering it, you might as well buy in after Berkshire announces how hard it got hit.
Allstate?(NYSE:ALL) rests on the cheaper side of insurance companies, trading at 9 times earnings, and it also pays a 2.2% dividend. Allstate offset its own $1.17 billion first-half underwriting loss from last year with $657 million this year.
The other area where stocks might see a pop are home-improvement stores. In this sector, it?s tough to do better than?Home Depot?(NYSE:HD). After all these years, the company continues to grow impressively, with long-term growth rates at 15%, and trading at 20 times this year?s estimates. That?s not outrageously expensive when you consider that the company churned out $5.43 billion in free cash flow last year, and already has produced $3.7 billion in the first half of this year. It?s a solid buy for the portfolio, even with Hurricane Sandy bearing down.
You also can consider?Lowe?s Companies?(NYSE:LOW), which similarly is pegged at 15% long-term growth, although this year is expected to be flat. Free cash flow here also is impressive, tallying $2.5 billion in each of the past three years. LOW pays a 2% yield and carries $9 billion in debt (to Home Depot?s $10.7 billion), which is very manageable given the free cash flow. It also trades at 20 times estimates.
Finally, when a storm like this hits, I think booze. Somebody will be drowning their sorrows because they don?t have insurance and thus can?t afford to fix things up using a home improvement company. Here I like?Beam?(NYSE:BEAM), not just for its whiskey, but because it?s still growing at 12% long-term and has ample free cash flow.
As of this writing, Lawrence Meyers did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

UNH students exiting the Whittemore Center after catching a hockey game or utilizing the gym will no longer see athletes practicing on the bright green Memorial Field. On Saturday, Oct. 20, university officials announced the closure of the artificial turf field due to elevated lead levels detected in dust samples.
The field had been deteriorating for quite some time, and it was this deterioration that prompted the finding of lead. The field was constructed in 2002, and renovation was scheduled for the upcoming fiscal year. Now, however, UNH officials are ?developing an earlier timeline for replacement,? according to a press release issued by the university. No details as to exactly when the field will be replaced or how it will be financed have been released; even campus recreation officials were not sure.
Artificial fields typically degrade after 10 years, so this deterioration was not out of the ordinary. Campus Recreation Director Stacey Hall confirmed that this was the result of normal wear and tear. ?
Closing the field was more of a precaution than a response to an actual threat, as the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services reported that adults would not be at risk due to the lead content.
However, children six years old and younger would be at risk, according to the department.
While the Centers for Disease Control found in 2008 that there were no reported cases where elevated blood levels in children were linked to artificial turf fields, the university felt that closing the field was the safest thing to do.
In a press release, UNH Director of Athletics Marty Scarano issued a statement regarding the field?s closing.
?The safety and well-being of our students, staff and faculty, as well as our many visitors, is of the utmost importance,? Scarano said. ?We felt any risk of exposure to lead was too much and that closing the field was the right thing to do.?
Hall agreed that safety remains a top priority, and stated that campus recreation and athletic facilities are carefully monitored on a regular basis. Personnel reported the deterioration of Memorial Field, thus prompting the testing.
?Routine maintenance is an important thing,? Hall said.
Memorial Field hosted many sports, including field hockey, lacrosse and ultimate Frisbee. While many of the intramural and club sports teams practice at Boulder Field, Bremner Field, and the new student recreation field (all located near Cowell Stadium), varsity team practices and games must be rescheduled and relocated. The athletic department declined to comment as to how this will affect its athletes.
Although the lower fields are now crowded, and scheduling is more difficult, some students see the closure of the field as a good thing.
?The turf on Memorial Field was definitely not as good as the pro-grass on the lower fields,? said Tim Patterson, a junior Frisbee team member. ?We?re just happy that we get to play on a nicer field.?

KENNEBUNK ? An exhibit featuring eight notable Maine photographers is on exhibit at the Irvine Gallery at River Tree Arts. The exhibit, "Photographers Choice," will run through Nov. 15.
The photographers whose work is on exhibit include local photographers Andrea Mabee, Mary Woodman, Joseph Barnett, and Brad Maushart, as well as Felice Boucher, Joseph Devenney, Beth Anne Gordley and Jim Nichelson.
Each photographer participating in this show has a unique style and clearly presents their images with their own vision.
Rather than a more traditional photography exhibit that has a tight focus that revolves around a specific subject matter or genre, this exhibit has given each photographer the freedom to select whatever work they feel might best represent their talent.
As a result, there is great variety and creativity that is presented in this exhibit.
Fine art photography has limitless possibilities, and by design Photographers Choice has given the viewer a wonderful sampling of some extraordinary talent.
Many of the photographers in this show have won numerous national and international awards and their work can be found in museums and private collections.

Thinking of emulating Audrey Hepburn in the 1953 romantic comedy 'Roman Holiday' by eating a gelato on the Spanish Steps? Think again. It could prove to be a very expensive ice cream.
By Nick Squires,?Correspondent / October 7, 2012

As of this week, anyone caught snacking around the Eternal City?s centuries-old monuments and archeological sites could find themselves landed with a fine of up to 500 euros ($650).
In an attempt to bring a greater level of decorum to a city not known for order, Rome city council has passed a decree banning tourists from snacking in the historic center, which recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
That includes Piazza Navona, with its exquisite marble fountains, and the Pantheon, a vast Roman temple converted into a church. Other areas subject to the crackdown include Via dei Fori Imperiali, the broad avenue which links Piazza Venezia, Rome?s main square, with the Colosseum, the ancient arena where gladiators and slaves once fought.
Thinking of emulating Audrey Hepburn in the 1953 romantic comedy Roman Holiday by eating a gelato on the Spanish Steps? Think again. It could prove to be a very expensive ice cream.
"It is forbidden to encamp or erect makeshift shelters and stop to eat or drink in zones which have a particular historic or architectural value," reads the ordinance adopted by Rome city council this week.
The law is intended to ?guarantee the protection of areas of merit in the historic center,? it added.
In what one Italian newspaper, La Repubblica, called the start of a ?war on the panino," fines will range from 25 euros ($32) up to 500 euros ($650).
In many ways the new clamp-down reflects a schism in attitudes towards public eating between Italians and tourists.
Visitors may be happy to chow down on a slice of pizza or sandwich?on the steps of a Renaissance church or ancient Roman monument, taking a rest from the exhausting challenge of touring the city on foot. But that leaves most Romans aghast ? they rarely eat or drink on the street.
You don't see people guzzling enormous take-out coffees from paper cups; Italians go to a cafe for a cappuccino or a cafe macchiato, and drink it there, often standing up at the bar.
Eating in public is not done. I have even been told off for eating in a restaurant while reading a newspaper ? on the grounds that it will ruin my digestion, and that I should forget about work at least for an hour.
Rome is just the latest Italian city to try to curb indecorous behavior by tourists.
Similar bans have been adopted in Venice, where snacking is prohibited in St. Mark's Square and around famous landmarks, as well as Florence and Bologna.
But critics said the draconian new law could drive away tourists just as Italy needs them more than ever ? locals are spending less in restaurants, bars, and cafes as a result of a grinding recession and the imposition of austerity measures intended to tame the country?s 1.9 trillion euro national debt.
The center-right mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, is acting like a ?sheriff? and ?transforming Rome into a city of rules and regulations,? said Angelo Bonelli, an opposition councilor in the city administration.
Others said Rome had more serious problems to contend with ? streets are often strewn with rubbish, illegal hawkers and touts harass tourists outside St. Peter?s Basilica and the Colosseum, and cars are allowed to double- or even triple-park.
?To start pestering tourists while they are eating lunch out of a bag really seems the last of our problems,? says Dario Nanni, a member of the left-leaning Democratic Party.
Italy has a somewhat checkered history when it comes to law enforcement, so whether tourists munching on sandwiches and slices of pizza really will be slapped with heavy fines remains to be seen.

Academic achievement improved among students active in structured after-school programs
Wednesday, October 10, 2012School-age children who participate in structured after-school activities improve their academic achievement, according to a new study from Southern Methodist University, Dallas.
The study by researchers in SMU's Simmons School of Education and Human Development measured academic performance of students enrolled in Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas.
"Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas and other structured programs are really having a positive impact," said Ken Springer, an associate professor. "We believe that the homework support that the clubs consistently provide students may be a key factor. Now we plan to extend the study and take into account more variables."
The study looked at data on 719 students in second through eighth grade who participated in after-school activities at one of 12 clubs during the 2009-2010 academic year.
Among elementary and middle-school children who participated frequently in club activities, the researchers saw grades improve from the start of the year to the end of the year. That was especially true for elementary students. The researchers also saw improved school attendance for both age groups.
Among elementary students who participated in a greater variety of activities, the researchers observed that the students' grade point averages improved, "but only among elementary students, and only when program participation was substantial," said the authors.
Afterschool care can provide children with sense of success Afterschool care activities can provide a child with a sense of success, even if that child isn't necessarily successful in the classroom, said Deborah Diffily, co-author on the study and an associate professor in Simmons.
"For children who live in poverty ? often those who attend Boys and Girls Clubs ? the clubs can ameliorate the pressures of poverty, such as living in an overcrowded apartment or a lack of after-school snacks," Diffily said.
The authors reported their findings in "The Relationship Between Intensity and Breadth of After-School Program Participation and Academic Achievement: Evidence from a Short-Term Longitudinal Study," in the Journal of Community Psychology.
Springer and Diffily both teach in Simmons' Department of Teaching and Learning.
Study considered how frequently children participated and the volume of activities About 15 percent of American students participate in some sort of structured, supervised program outside of school, say the authors. Another 30 percent would participate if quality programming were available, they report.
"After-school programs are increasingly viewed as a means of supporting children's physical, academic, social and behavioral development," according to Springer and Diffily. Increasingly, federal funding is tied to empirical evidence that proves programs are beneficial.
Within the scientific literature, the psychological and social benefits of programs are well-documented, the authors said. Benefits observed include better social skills, greater motivation, better classroom behavior, higher self-esteem and lower rates of criminal activity.
However, evidence of any academic benefits is mixed. Some studies show benefits for grades or achievement test scores, while others don't, said the authors. Those discrepancies have been attributed to variations in study methodologies. Rarely have studies considered intensity and breadth, as in the current study.
Boys and Girls Clubs' unique structure is comprehensive, has history of success Springer and Diffily looked specifically at children who are members of Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, which is part of Boys and Girls Clubs of America, one of the nation's oldest after-school programs.
A nonprofit organization, Boys and Girls Clubs of America comprises about 4,000 community-based clubs that serve more than 4 million children after school every weekday. Annual membership costs are low and cover daily access, homework support and choice of age-appropriate activities.
Each club's programs span five areas: Character and Leadership; Education and Career; Health and Life Skills; Arts; and Sports, Fitness and Recreation.
During a daily, designated homework period, staff and volunteers divide the students into groups by age and help them complete their homework.
Methodology tapped BGCGD data logged for each participant The study relied on absences and students' grades for English, math and science from the first six weeks and the final six weeks of the school year.
Besides looking at grades and attendance, the researchers also calculated overall GPA and overall school absences.
Springer and Diffily found that the more frequent the participation, the greater the improvement in overall GPA. That correlation was stronger for elementary students, and for grades as opposed to school attendance.
Likewise, the researchers observed a positive correlation between activity and GPA. The more activities attended, the greater the increase in overall GPA among elementary students. Breadth wasn't associated with improved GPA among middle-schoolers. Also, breadth didn't impact absences for either age group.
Academic benefits may be the result of club influences or to shielding students from negative influences outside the clubs, or both, said Springer and Diffily.
"Children benefited from the clubs regardless of the extent of participation in any one program," the authors said, "but the more programs for which they attended the majority of meetings, the greater the benefits.

Wild Blood, Gameloft's first Unreal-powered game, is now available in Google Play for $6.99. The action game loosely follows the mythology of King Arthur and in particular his knight Sir Lancelot. Arthur has lost his gourd and opened up a the very gates of hell, leaving Lancelot to beat back the evil with whatever steely or magical implements of destruction he can find. Meanwhile, Queen Guinevere got herself captured, which sucks for Lancelot since he's been seeing her on the DL.
I got a bit of playtime in, and though the framerate is a bit choppy on the Nexus 7 and there are optional in-app purchases employed, the action is fast, and the monsters are absolutely awesome. Anyone else pick this up? Worth the seven bucks? How's performance on your device? Still a little tacky to push IAPs in premium-priced games, no?

If you're one of those people that can't pull yourself away from your phone, blogger Jeff VanNieulande offers a simple suggestion: password protect your apps so they become less enticing to use.
By giving each app a long, arduous password, you not only make it less appealing, you also remind yourself of the addiction you're trying to squash:
Having to put in a long password definitely breaks me out of the mindless pull-out-my-phone-for-30-seconds habit I've been in. I actually think that simply seeing the password prompt reminds me "oh yeah, I'm trying to break this habit" and is enough to get me to put my phone away. Then when I make a conscious decision to use an app, I have no problems putting in that long password. Some apps I haven't even used since I implemented this, and others (like the aforementioned Instagram) I've only been checking maybe once or twice a day.
So how do you do it? Both iOS and Android have a lot of apps that can password protect your apps, but here are the ones we recommend:
On the iPhone, you'll need to be jailbroken first. Then, just download an app like LockDown Pro. It's $2.99, but incredibly easy to use: just install it, open up its preferences in your iPhone's Settings, and set up your custom password. You can then either lock all your apps, or press and hold an icon on the home screen to go into "jiggle mode" and lock one of the apps right then and there.
On Android, most apps only allow for pattern-based or number-based passwords, which won't work for our needs. So, we recommend Smart AppLock. By default, it locks your apps with a pattern, but you can change this to a password in the settings (it only allows passwords of 16 characters or less, but this should be enough to deter you). So, just set your password and tell it which apps you want to lock. If you want, you can grab the $1.99 pro version to get rid of the ads.
Once you've set up your app of choice, you should find that it asks you for a password in order to run any of your distracting apps. Hopefully, that will make you less likely to pull up Facebook, Instagram, and other apps that pull your attention away from more important things.
