WASHINGTON (AP) - Maicon Santos scored his first two goals with his new club and added an assist to lead D.C. United to a 4-1 victory over F.C. Dallas Friday night.
Nick De Leon added a goal, the second of his rookie season, and Danny Cruz also scored as United (1-1-2) picked up their first win of the new season.
Blas Perez scored his second goal of the year before halftime for FC Dallas (1-1-2), which has now lost its second straight on the road after beginning the season with a win and draw at home.
Dallas' Daniel Hernandez was sent off in the 78th minute when he picked up his second yellow card after a rough challenge on Dwayne De Rosario.
After reaching halftime tied 1-all, United scored three goals during a 13-minute stretch to turn what had been a close contest into a comfortable win.
De Leon struck in the 60th minute, controlling a perfect cross from Santos with his first touch, and hammering a half-volley past Dallas' Kevin Hartman with his second.
Six minutes later, De Leon got free on the left and drove a low cross to Cruz, whose one-time effort bounced past Hartman from close range.
Santos, who was acquired from Toronto F.C in the offseason, then scored his second in the 73rd minute, heading in De Rosario's cross.
Television replays appeared to show Santos in an offside position when the ball was played.
Santos' blasted a 25-yard strike past Hartman before halftime to give United an early 1-0 lead, before Perez struck just before halftime after a flubbed defensive clearance.
Bill Hamid, United's usual starting goalkeeper, missed Friday's match with a left ankle sprain suffered in the United States' 3-3 draw against El Salvador in Olympic qualifying Monday.
Joe Willis replaced Hamid, who is expected to miss one to weeks according to a team press release, and made three crucial first-half saves to move to 1-1-1 in three starts.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A federal judge on Tuesday blocked the importation of a drug used in executions on grounds the Food and Drug Administration ignored the law in allowing it into this country.
U.S. District Judge Richard Leon sided with lawyers for death row inmates in Tennessee, Arizona and California who want to keep out sodium thiopental, because it is an unapproved drug manufactured overseas. The Obama administration argued it had discretion to allow unapproved drugs into the U.S.
But Leon said the FDA's actions were "contrary to law, arbitrary, capricious, and an abuse of discretion." He said that plain language of the law says that an article that appears to be misbranded or unapproved "shall be refused admission."
Leon scolded the agency: "Put simply, this appears to be nothing more than the FDA, once again, stubbornly clinging to every last ounce of its discretionary authority!"
Sodium thiopental is an anesthetic used to put inmates to sleep before other lethal drugs are administered. The drug's U.S. manufacturer announced last year that it would no longer produce it, which forced corrections officials to delay many executions. Many of the nation's 34 death penalty states switched to an alternative drug, pentobarbital ? a point Leon stressed.
In addition to blocking the FDA from allowing the drug into the country, Leon also ordered the FDA to immediately notify any state correctional departments with foreign-manufactured thiopental that its use is prohibited by law, and that the drug must be returned to the FDA.
A lawyer for the death row challengers, Brad Berenson, said in an email that "it was especially gratifying that the court recognized that even the most despised members of our society are entitled to the protections Congress gave to all Americans in the Food Drug and Cosmetic Act."
The FDA declined to comment on the ruling or say whether it planned to appeal.
Leon, who was appointed by President George W. Bush, dismissed the FDA's contention that the death row inmates lacked standing.
"Here, the threatened injury ? that unapproved foreign thiopental will fail to anesthetize plaintiffs properly during execution, causing conscious suffocation, pain, and cardiac arrest ? is, to say the least, severe," the judge wrote. "Indeed, few in our society are more vulnerable than a death row inmate facing lethal injection."
Leon also said that the FDA was undermining its own policy of maintaining a closed drug distribution system designed to keep dangerous drugs out of U.S. commerce.
"By opening up the 'closed' drug system by allowing an unapproved drug ? thiopental ? into the United States, defendants jeopardize their own system and threaten the public health by creating a risk that thiopental could incorrectly end up in the hands of the general public," he wrote.

Through surveying more than 1,400 car buyers, Silva-Risso and his co-authors, Fiona Scott Morton, of Yale University, and Florian Zettelmeyer, of Northwestern University, found buyers could save about $800 if they find out what a dealer pays for a car, visit two dealerships, like to bargain and like to do research and price comparisons before making a purchase.
The research also found that a consumer who doesn't like to bargain or do a lot of research can save $230 by doing just two things: finding out what the dealer pays for the car and visiting two dealerships.
"This really shows that even the consumer who doesn't like to bargain can get the price reduced if they are informed," Silva-Risso said. "And, if they are aggressive, and like bargaining, they can save even more.
"My recommendation is that they arm themselves with as much information as possible and be patient in the negotiations until they find the car they like at the right price."
Silva-Risso started working at UC Riverside in 2003 after seven years at J.D. Power and Associates. There he developed and implemented quantitative models of consumer responses to marketing programs offered by the automobile industry, particularly on car sales incentives, such as rebates, promotional interest rates and lease support programs. The models were adopted and continue to be used by most of the major car manufacturers.
Silva-Risso has also done contract work for General Motors, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Toyota and BMW.
The paper, "What matters in a price negotiation: Evidence from the U.S. auto retailing industry," was published in Quantitative Marketing and Economics.
Among the findings from the paper:
Buyers who have learned the dealer's invoice price save on average $121.
A consumer saves $109, or about 7 percent of dealer gross margin, when a consumer shops at two dealerships instead of one and about $600 when a consumer shops at as many as seven dealerships.
Consumers with the most willingness to do multiple rounds of bargaining save an average of $302.
Consumers with lower search costs, or time and effort to find information on the car, pay on average $287 less than those with high search costs. Typically consumers without the resources to search for information have high search costs.
The survey is based on surveys collected in 2002 from 1,402 car buyers who purchased one of eight car models in California.
