In further experiments, the scientists showed that the activity of the nerve cells is caused by sodium channels and voltage-gated calcium channels in the cell membrane. "A drug that targets these channels would, conceivably, be able to suppress the pain - but that's still in the future", says Ben Novak.

Visionary fined $200,000 for home 'improvements'

LAGUNITAS, Calif. -- David Hoffman is not your typical outlaw. For one, every conversation veers toward the inevitable topic of conservation and sustainability. He can?t understand why people need things like septic tanks ? or why they use perfectly good drinking water to wash their cars.

It?s not Hoffman?s ideas that got him into trouble. It was the execution. Forty years of it.

Four decades ago, Hoffman started some home improvements on his house in the wooded hills of the Marin County town of Lagunitas. He harbored ideas and theories of how people could live more sustainably. He started building.

A concrete boat in the middle of a homemade pond houses a 15-foot-deep well, powered by solar power.

He dug a massive valley near the slope of his home and installed a pond. In the middle of it he built a concrete boat to house a 15-foot well. The groundwater would refill the pond, through a sun-powered pump.

As the owner of a tea distribution business, Hoffman also built a tea house with ornate metal carvings of dragons and a sloped tile roof.

He carved elaborate caves to dry his rare tea leaves. He constructed a tower bearing a solar shower that hovers over a moat carrying recycled water from the house.

?Most people come here, they see the visual, they see the structures,? said Hoffman. ?For me what?s important is the systems behind it.?

His systems include a small wood box filled with earthworms, whose job it is to digest leftover food scraps and cleanse recycled water that runs from the kitchen sink.

Another curious feature is an outdoor toilet. For a time, Hoffman eschewed a septic system in favor of the worms taking care of the human waste.

?I have three different designs on the property for turning human manure or body waste into a valuable fertilizer,? said Hoffman.

In all, some 30 homemade structures fill the property, many partially unfinished.

?I guess you could say I had a vision,? said Hoffman. ?I had a dream.?

But Hoffman?s vision had one very fatal flaw. He never got permits for any of his projects. For over two decades, county officials red-tagged his buildings. But Hoffman carried on.

?I just build it anyway,? Hoffman said. ?I figure there will be value in what I?ve done.?

County officials didn?t see it that way. His fines have run up to over $200,000, and he?s been ordered to tear down all 30 of his illegal structures by Aug. 1.

?David Hoffman ignored the county for 20 years,? said Marin County Supervisor Steve Kinsey. ?It came at his own peril.?

Hoffman has been locked in a legal battle with the county for years. In county reports, inspectors would return to the property to inspect previously red-tagged buildings, only to find new ones had sprouted up in the interim.

?We need rules, but we need to have people who have ideas,? reasoned Hoffman.

After repeated efforts to get Hoffman to comply, county officials referred the case to an administrative law judge in January.

?We hope the hearing officer?s decision will have a positive side by motivating David to turn over a new leaf and begin to improve his property,? wrote Marin County Community Development Agency director Brian Crawford in a statement.

Kinsey said he hopes the county can broker a deal that might allow Hoffman to keep his home. He said the county is also exploring the creation of a non-profit organization that could oversee the property.

?It would be tragic in my opinion, to see that piece of work destroyed,? said Kinsey.

Hoffman is also holding out hope he and his wife can somehow keep the property, the buildings and the ecological experiments. In the meantime, there?s a tea house to finish, a garden to plant, and the bell tower still needs wood slats to keep out the raccoons.

S. Sudan shrugs off gloom to celebrate year of freedom

South Sudan has put aside dire warnings over the stability and economic viability of the fledgling nation, the world's newest, to celebrate its first year of independence.

Crowds took to the streets of the capital Juba on Monday, with people crammed into cars driving around the city and honking horns to mark the first anniversary since separating from former civil war foes Sudan.

"We have fought for our right to be counted among the community of the free nations and we have earned it," South Sudanese President Salva Kiir told a crowd of several thousand gathered in the baking sun at a military parade.

Grossly impoverished South Sudan has spent the past year wracked by border wars with the rump state of Sudan, as well as internal violence and the shutdown of its vital oil production in a bitter dispute with Khartoum.

But Kiir, speaking at the grave of the late rebel leader John Garang, said the fledgling nation must do more to cut corruption, and learn to step away from the massive donor support that props up the country.

"To the extent that we still depend on others, our liberty today is incomplete," Kiir told the flag-waving crowds. "We must be more than liberated, we have to be independent economically."

Amid the independence celebrations, the United States called South Sudan to reach an agreement with Sudan to export its oil, saying that the new nation critically needed a source of revenue.

"One of the most immediate challenges for South Sudan is to take a hard, pragmatic and courageous approach to its current economic crisis. Without oil revenue, many development projects now on the books will be delayed," said Princeton Lyman, the US special envoy for Sudan and South Sudan.

Oil made up virtually all of South Sudan's revenue but the landlocked, Western-supported nation halted its exports in January in a row with Sudan over pipeline fees.

South Sudan remains one of the world's poorest countries, where even the most basic infrastructure, such as roads, electricity and water distribution networks, is lacking.

The early euphoria of independence on July 9, 2011, has since given way to a harsh reality.

"Next year, when we celebrate the same occasion, we must be in a better shape than we are today," Kiir said.

Khartoum's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Salahudin Wanasy Mohammed Khair attended the celebrations, congratulating the South on its independence in a speech that was received with muted response.

Kiir said Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir -- the first to recognise the nation last year -- had turned down his invitation to attend the military march.

Tension remains high with Khartoum after heavy border fighting in March and April along oil-rich disputed frontier regions, and officials held out collection boxes at the ceremony to raise funds for frontline troops.

"We have lost many of our comrades and today we are thinking of them," said James Hoth, chief of staff of the South's army, recalling both those who died in the decades of civil war with Khartoum, as well as clashes earlier this year.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni told the crowd he understood the struggle with "the short man from Khartoum" and that South Sudan's "sisters and brothers" in Uganda would support them.

Other guests included former South African president Thabo Mbeki, who is mediating slow-moving AU-led talks between Sudan and South Sudan.

African Union commission chairman Jean Ping noted the "tremendous difficulties" the South has faced, adding that he urged both Juba and Khartoum to stick to AU and UN Security Council resolutions to broker peace between them.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton echoed those concerns, warning in a statement that "peace and development... will only be possible once South Sudan and Sudan live side by side as good neighbours respecting each other's sovereignty".

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned in a statement that conflict, unresolved issues with Sudan and internal violence threaten to "compromise the very foundation on which South Sudan's future will be built".

United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon, who Juba said had been scheduled to attend, said in speech read out by officials that "South Sudan can now proudly walk the world stage as a country" but warned much more needed to be done.

"A lot has been achieved since independence, but a lot also needs to be done," Ban said. "The road ahead will not be without challenges, but I am confident... South Sudan will overcome any obstacles and succeed in becoming a prosperous nation."

The Golden College Program allows Montana senior citizens to take college classes at the Bitterroot College of The University of Montana at greatly reduced rates.

Golden College participants may audit classes or take classes for credit. The program?s tuition waiver saves students nearly $300 for one three-credit course. Program participants still will need to pay applicable college fees.

Freddie Stevenson Commits To Florida State Seminoles

Freddie Stevenson, a top linebacker recruit, committed to Florida State Wednesday. Steveneon stars for Bartow (Fla High School). Stevenson chose Florida State over offers from Texas A&M & Penn State, and interest from Florida. The various recruiting sites give him three or four stars.

I spoke with Stevenson earlier in June.

Unfortunately for Stevenson, he was injured last November, breaking his fibula. The January surgery required a plate and pins to be inserted in his leg. The pins are now out, but when doctors remove them, they discovered that the cartilage in his ankle was insufficient. Doctors filled the ankle with gel, and Stevenson now says that he is close to 90 percent. He was officially cleared during the last week of spring football, but didn't want to risk re-injury while his rehab continued.

Despite the injury, top schools have stuck by Stevenson. He holds double digit offers and recently named his top four schools. They are Florida State, Texas A&M, Penn State and Florida, though the Gators have yet to offer.

I spoke with Stevenson about each of his top schools.

"With Florida State, it's the system that they have to support your whole life, the comfort I have up here, and my relationship with the coaching staff," Stevenson said. "I talk with Odell Haggins and am starting to talk to Hudson," he offered, speaking of Haggins, Florida State's defensive line coach who recruits Bartow's region, and Hudson, FSU's linebacker coach.

I asked if he might commit to either in-state school before taking the trips, which typically occur later in the year. "Only if there was no doubt. It would have to be perfect," Stevenson said. Stevenson said he does not have a specific timetable to make his decision, but since it likely won't happen until after the official visits, it's safe to say it won't occur for at least a few months.

Stevenson is extremely athletic. He has decent size at 6'1 and 225 or 230. Calling him a run and hit linebacker would be accurate.

Physicists bet they're homing in on Higgs

Illinois lab issues its last word on the long-sought particle

As physicists in Europe prep for a major announcement about the long-sought Higgs particle, U.S. scientists are not going gentle into that good night. Researchers at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois have squeezed out the last drop of analysis on their own data ? and concluded that the Higgs, if it exists, should have a mass between 115 and 135 billion electron volts.

That range, reported July 2, is not substantially different from earlier reports. It fits with hints reported by the European laboratory CERN in December, which suggested the Higgs might have a mass around 125 billion electron volts (SN: 12/31/11, p. 10). A proton has a mass of around 1 billion electron volts.

The Fermilab report ?is the strongest evidence of Higgs boson production at any collider,? says Dmitri Denisov, a physicist at the lab.

Still, the data aren?t strong enough to claim that the Higgs particle has been spotted. ?I would be willing to bet your house, but not mine,? says Rob Roser, another Fermilab physicist.

Many physicists expect to hear convincing, or near-convincing, evidence of the Higgs? existence on July 4, when CERN will report its latest data.

The Higgs is the last undiscovered fundamental particle in physics? standard model, which describes the particles that make up the universe and the forces that govern their interactions. Several theorists, including the University of Edinburgh?s Peter Higgs, proposed the particle in 1964 as a signal of a field that would have slow down the motion of some elementary particles, giving them mass.

Fermilab?s data come from its now-shuttered Tevatron collider, which slammed beams of protons into their antimatter counterpart, antiprotons. Between 2001 and 2011(SN: 9/24/11, p. 22), it gathered data on 500 trillion such collisions. Each created a shower of particle debris that physicists can scour for traces of the Higgs, which if it exists would have emerged in a small fraction of collisions and then immediately decayed away into other particles.

Tevatron scientists have about the same amount of data as CERN has so far, but at much lower energies. That means far fewer Higgs particles should have been produced in Illinois than in Europe. Still, data from the two main Tevatron detectors suggest that there are more particle ?events? in the 115 billion to 135 billion electron volt range than one would expect if the Higgs did not exist, Fermilab scientists reported at an in-house seminar.

Further analysis from Europe should pin down whether this signal is real or not. CERN has the mother of all atom smashers: The 27-kilometer-circumference Large Hadron Collider collides protons with protons at energies never before achieved. Project scientists will present their latest findings at a CERN seminar on the morning of July 4, Geneva time, and also later in the week at a high-energy physics conference in Melbourne, Australia. Rumors are flying that the 125 GeV signal may have gotten stronger with data from CERN?s 2012 data run.

If the Higgs is found, the question turns to whether its properties match predictions made by the standard model, or whether they are slightly different. ?If we do find the Higgs, we can start to play these measurements off each other and decide if we have a standard model Higgs or if there?s new physics involved,? said Fermilab physicist Eric James.

Key to the July 4 announcement will be the statistical strength of any reported Higgs signal. Separately, each of the LHC?s two main Higgs experiments may not be able to achieve the desired ?five-sigma? signal, meaning the probability is less than 1 in 3.5 million that a statistical fluke could create the same signal or a more extreme one. Combined, the experiments may be able to reach that threshold. (The Tevatron analysis from its two detectors is just under three sigma, meaning the chance is 1 in 550 that a statistical fluke could create something at least as unusual.)

How long it will take, though, remains a mystery. ?I can tell you 2012 is the year? to learn if the Higgs exists or not, says Tom LeCompte of Argonne National Laboratory. ?I can?t tell you July is the month.?
