92% Safety Not Guaranteed

Question: If you could go back in time, what time would you return to and why? Normally I answer, or vaguely answer, my own questions in these reviews but I?m not going to on this one. I am not an overly nostalgic person unless it has to do with a film or a band. Plus, after seeing Safety Not Guaranteed this past weekend, I learned a valuable lesson. Sorry if this confuses anyone but you will just have to see Safety Not Guaranteed to understand what I am referring to?.or trying to, at least. I have wanted to see this film for a long time. There was just something about the story that drew me to it ? not too long ago I even posted the preview on here; and I save those posts usually for films that I think will be interesting, unique or that tell a story that will move me. This one did, not drastically, but enough to get me out of my writer?s block (fingers crossed) and make me contemplate parts of my life. That?s what I want from most films, art, books, etc?an opportunity to think; notice something you hadn?t before; and look upon an idea with a fresh perspective, etc? Safety Not Guaranteed took on an age-old idea: looking back on your past with regret and hoping you can change things so you wouldn?t be unhappy now. And the filmmakers made a charming, perfectly decent film that will just make you smile. Plus, they added the idea of time travel. Who wouldn?t like that, right? So, I ask again, would you want to go back in time and why? For most, I believe, the reasoning will involve another person: a partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, parent or someone with whom you hurt or they did something that haunts you, still. We all make mistakes. Mistakes are thrust upon us. We fall in love with the wrong person, or the right person, and hearts get broken no matter what. Also, we can be cruel to another. Admit it ? we have ALL been there. We are human. Safety Not Guaranteed represented several aspects of people?s regret and/or searching for the cure to change their current situation. And I think most will be able to relate. Now the next question(s): Could we fix it? Should we fix it? Would we be better off if we changed these brief, few moments of the past? Or are we where we are supposed to be? Thinking about regrets is enough to drive you a little mad. And that?s how the actor in this film, Mark Duplass? character, is portrayed. Someone who must be insane because he puts a classified ad in the paper requesting a partner go back in time with him. He declares it will be dangerous and your safety will not be guaranteed. His ad intrigues a magazine editor ? enough to send a writer and two interns to check the story out. There are a couple other character in this film that display the same sort of desire to change their present by reaching towards the past: The young intern, Darius, played by Aubrey Plaza and her boss, Jeff, played by Jake. M. Johnson. Both these characters represented the vast differences on why someone would want to go back in time. I liked both characters, a lot. In fact, Jeff was one that kept the comedy going in this film. He?s the type of guy you don?t want to like but he evokes sympathy when you aren?t expecting. Darius is a sarcastic girl that has a deep, hidden secret on why she is unhappy now. As for the rest of the story, no more details. Just go see this film. It is slated as a comedy, and it was absolutely funny at parts but it is not slap stick or a joke every few minutes type of film. The humor is subtle and well placed. Safety Not Guaranteed showed real humor, the humor we all have in our lives. The absurdity that is ever present ? that?s what makes it a comedy. However, I would categorize this as a drama as well. And that?s a compliment. Bottom line: Just give me a good story, tell it well and with respect (especially for the audience), and you?ve got a fan in me. Safety Not Guaranteed did all three. Well done! My favorite thing: There might too many things to list here. I just really, really liked this film. Okay, I laughed OUT LOUD when Jeff raises his fists in the air. His reaction to what was happening just kept me smiling and smiling. My least favorite thing: I got nothing this time. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, Big Beach Films, 2012 Genre: Comedy Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Jake M. Johnson, Mark Duplass, Karan Soni, Jeff Garlin and Kristen Bell. Rating: R Length: 86 minutes Review: 9 out of 10

A New Slur

Is there an algorithm for suffering? One that calibrates how much empathy we should feel for the victims of genocide? What degree of concern is ?rational?? What degree is excessive, ?obsessed?? Should the degree to which we grieve about, analyze?and react to the threat of?mass murders be calculable objectively?

It would make things easier if we could just take number of actual dead, say, (or the number the killers wanted dead), times the percentage of victim-group killed, maybe multiplied by the logarithm of cruelty of the methodology of mass killing, divided by the number of decades in the past the crime occurred. (Time is a factor: Hitler was famously quoted as saying, in 1939, ?Who, after all, speaks today of the extermination of the Armenians?? After all, the Holocaust took place seven decades ago, the Armenian horror a little more than two decades before Hitler?s remark. Lucky for him there were few ?obsessed? with this mass murder at the time.)

If there were an algorithm for suffering perhaps we would be able to judiciously appraise the claims that there are some among us (mostly Jewish) who are ?holocaust obsessed.? It?s the new fashionable meme for those who don?t want to be overly troubled by the memory of the death camps and looming threats of a second holocaust. The term enables those who use it to suggest that those more concerned than they are "obsessed" in an unseemly way.

It's the word "obsessed" that seems problematic to me. It implies a bright line between legitimate interest and something else, something over-intense, feverish, and counterproductive. But where is that line? How much time should we spend worrying about the threat of future Holocausts and genocides, not just those involving Jews.

The much-lauded German novelist W.G. Sebald has been quoted saying "no serious person thinks of anything else." This was obviously a form of hyperbole designed to jolt people out of complacency. But it raises the question: How much does a serious person think about the Holocaust? What does it mean to be "obsessed" and what does it mean to give the Holocaust an appropriate place in our political and cultural consciousness?

I admit I was stunned in exploring this question to find no less than 272,000 Google hits for "obsessed with the Holocaust." And it's not just racist sites (including David Duke's) or anti-Zionist sites like Mondoweiss.

Increasingly the word "obsessed"?as "obsessed with the holocaust" or "holocaust obsessed"?has entered contemporary discourse, often used by Jews as an epithet to describe other Jews. It may have entered the mainstream as far back as the publication of Peter Novick's 1999 book The Holocaust in American Life, in which he accuses American Jews as a whole of exploiting the Holocaust in bad faith, either as a "victimization Olympics" or for political (primarily pro-Israel) purposes.

The term "holocaust-obsessed" appeared in The New Yorker in an article about Israeli politician Avraham Burg who, according to David Remnick, "describes the country in its current state as Holocaust obsessed. ..." Too much attention to the extermination of 6 million Jews oh so long ago, just because 6 million or so more are being threatened with exterminationist rhetoric today.

It's lately become a trope of novelists and memoirists who seek to show how much more sophisticated they've become about the whole thing.

And recently the epithet has become a focus of the debate over the Israeli response to Iranian nuclear intentions. It was a prominent "peace activist" there, Uri Avnery who applied the phrase ?holocaust obsessed fantasist? to current Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Demonstrating that it has become a widely recognized shibboleth on both sides of the discourse over American Israeli relations, Jonathan Rosen, in his astute New York Times Book Review critique of Peter Beinart's Crisis in Zion offered a caustic assessment of those self-proclaimed enlightened moralists who accuse others of a "Holocaust-obsessed" mentality.

Assange berates United States from Ecuador embassy balcony

LONDON (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange berated the United States on Sunday from the balcony of the Ecuadorean embassy where he has sought refuge from arrest, challenging President Barack Obama to end what he called a witch-hunt against his whistle-blowing website.

Speaking from within the London mission to avoid being detained by British police who want to extradite him to Sweden for questioning over rape allegations, Assange said the United States was fighting a war against outlets like WikiLeaks.

Pitching himself alongside Russian punk band Pussy Riot and the New York Times newspaper, Assange said the United States risked shunting the world into an era of journalistic oppression. He did not mention the rape allegations.

"As WikiLeaks stands under threat, so does the freedom of expression and the health of all of our societies," Assange said, dressed in a maroon tie and blue shirt, flanked by the yellow, blue and red Ecuadorean flag with dozens of British policemen lined up on the pavement below.

"I ask President Obama to do the right thing: the United States must renounce its witch-hunt against WikiLeaks," Assange said in a 10-minute speech which he ended with two thumbs up to the world's media.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, a self-declared enemy of "corrupt" media and U.S. "imperialism", granted the former computer hacker political asylum last week, deepening a diplomatic standoff with Britain and Sweden.

Asylum in Ecuador marked the latest twist in a tumultuous journey for Assange since he incensed the United States and its allies by using his WikiLeaks website to leak hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic and military cables in 2010, disclosures that often embarrassed Washington.

Assange, 41, took sanctuary in the embassy in June, jumping bail after exhausting appeals in British courts against extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted in Sweden for questioning regarding allegations of rape and sexual assault against two women.

He says he fears Sweden will eventually hand him over to the United States where, in his view, he would face persecution and long-term imprisonment. The United States says it is not involved in the matter.

'WITCH-HUNT'?

To allow Assange to avoid arrest by stepping outside the embassy, a balcony door on an upper floor was removed, leading up to his first public appearance since seeking refuge in the diplomatic mission.

Despite having to stomach the apparent defiance of Assange scolding the world's superpower from a balcony in its capital, Britain's Foreign Office refused comment.

Speaking behind the condor of the Ecuadorean coat of arms on the white balcony railing of the embassy, Assange thanked Correa and Ecuador's diplomats, whom he praised for standing up against oppression.

"The sun came up on a different world and a courageous Latin American nation took a stand for justice," Assange, with cropped hair indicating a recent cut, said from the balcony.

Assange's attempt to escape extradition has touched off a diplomatic tussle between Britain and Ecuador, which accused London of threatening to raid its embassy and casting the dispute as an arrogant European power treating a Latin American nation like a colony.

Assange, who praised a dozen Latin American countries which he said had rallied against Britain in the dispute, said the United States was at a turning point which could drag the rest of the world into a new oppressive era.

He said U.S. army intelligence analyst Bradley Manning, accused of the largest leak of classified documents in U.S. history to WikiLeaks, was a hero who should be released by the United States.

Manning faces life in prison if convicted.

"If Bradley Manning did as he is accused, he is a hero and an example to all of us and one of the world's foremost political prisoners," said Assange. "Bradley Manning must be released."

'FIGHTING SPIRIT'

More than 50 of Assange supporters, many of whom have slept on sheets of cardboard outside the building since Wednesday, decorated barriers with messages of support for Assange and placards reading "asylum - end the witch hunt".

"They are not treating him fairly," said Chantal, 28, a French pro-WikiLeaks blogger who had traveled overnight with a friend from near Paris in the hope of seeing Assange speak.

"Great Britain has shown it doesn't respect human rights - political asylum is a right which should be respected by all countries," she said. She refused to give her surname.

There was also a large crowd of curious passersby and bemused shoppers with bags from the ritzy Harrods store nearby watching the proceedings from across the street.

"Julian Assange is in fighting spirit," Baltasar Garzon, a Spanish jurist and prominent human rights investigator who heads Assange's legal team, told reporters outside the embassy.

"He is thankful to the people of Ecuador and to President Correa for granting him asylum," said Garzon.

Britain says the dispute is about its legal obligations and that Assange should be extradited to Sweden. But Assange says he fears he will eventually be sent to the United States although Washington has so far kept its distance from the dispute.

Joseph Backholm, Head of the No on Gay Marriage Campaign

Preserve Marriage Washington, the group that?s running the campaign to overturn gay marriage in Washington State (?No? on Referendum 74), is far behind in funding. The ?pro? side has raised $5.7 million (including $2.5 million from Jeff Bezos and his wife Mackenzie) to PMW?s $400,000.

And the latest polling shows that Washington voters support the gay marriage measure 50-43 (Survey USA) and 49-39 (Elway). Polling on gay marriage in general also shows that state voters approve of it in general?51-42 in a Public Policy Polling poll and 54-33 in a Strategies 360 poll.

The National Organization for Marriage, the D.C.-based anti-gay marriage group, has pledged to contribute millions to Preserve Marriage Washington?s fight against gay marriage, but there are also pro-gay marriage measures in Maryland and Maine to fend off, plus an anti-gay marriage measure in Minnesota to support. Given that NOM has already broken its promise to bankroll Republican insurgents against pro-gay marriage state legislators in Washington, it?s not clear when NOM?which hasn?t yet returned our call?will step up to help PMW.

For this week?s Cola Q&A, we checked in with PMW?s campaign leader, Joseph Backholm, whose full-time gig is director of the Family Policy Institute of Washington, a Christian conservative advocacy nonprofit that?s bringing Rick Santorum to town in October.?Eds.

PubliCola: PMW?s fundraising seems to be stalling. NOM had pledged to help you out, but the money hasn?t come in. I see that they haven?t made good on their promise to help take out some of the Republican candidates that voted for gay marriage. So are you comfortable that NOM is going to come through for you?

Backholm: Well, we have a budget of $4 million . And we expect to raise what we need and to run and ultimately win the campaign.

PubliCola: Are you nervous about NOM not coming through?

Backholm: No. We will do what is necessary to win the campaign, and I?m not concerned with NOM specifically. There are lots of people involved with this, and there are lots of people working hard on this, and we?ll do what it takes and we?ll get there.

?We?re dealing with laws that are bigger than us. The laws of the universe are not subject to legislative preference.?

PubliCola: Six Washington Republican legislators voted for gay marriage. Polls show that young people increasingly support gay marriage. The macho Boeing machinist union supports the gay marriage referendum. The President of the United States is for it. Are you guys on the wrong side of history?

Backholm: We can?t lose this in the long run, because the arguments on the other side are wrong in the absolute sense. We?re dealing with laws that are bigger than us. The laws of the universe are not subject to legislative preference. And a hundred years from now, we won?t be having a discussion about whether kids need moms and dads and whether there?s a material difference between relationships involving people of the same gender or different genders. So I am not at all concerned that we are on the wrong side of history.

PubliCola: In the past, the traditional marriage movement has been on the offensive, proactively running initiatives to take away the rights of gay people. But now it seems like you?re on the defensive, retroactively trying to take away rights that have been granted to gay people. Is that campaign harder? And isn?t it a meaner position to take?taking away rights that have already been granted?

?This is about what is the institution of marriage, what purpose does it serve.?

Backholm: The question has never been about rights, it?s been about what marriage is. There?s never been the right to marry anyone you want. And everybody?s always had the same options in marriage, and some people choose not to get married and some people choose to get married, and that?s obviously a choice they have in a free society. But it?s always fundamentally been about what marriage is and what purpose that serves, and this is that same question. So I don?t think it is dramatically different, no.

And I don?t grant the premise, because it?s not about rights that individuals have. Gay people do and should have all the same rights as people who aren?t gay. [But] this is about what is the institution of marriage, what purpose does it serve.

PubliCola: What do you think the purpose of marriage is? Why is allowing two people to start a family, that is, allowing a gay couple that has kids to become a married couple with kids, not a good thing to do?

Backholm: We don?t object to people forming relationships, and making choices in their own life, as they see fit. Unfortunately, in Washington, same-sex couples already have all the rights and benefits of marriage, so it couldn?t be a question of, are we treating people or even pairs of people or even relationships differently.

?We?re not talking about two people. We?re talking about public policy.?

The question is, what is the institution of marriage? And the reason that matters is because if you say that if these relationships are in every way the same, what you?re saying is that there?s no difference between a relationship involving people of the same gender, and people of different gender.

And what that then requires you to believe is that there?s no difference between a relationship that can provide a child a mother and father, and one that cannot. And we don?t believe that our public policy wants to take that position. Because I think that we want to encourage, as often as possible, arrangements where children can have both their mother and father present in their lives, while of course recognizing that doesn?t always happen and allowing people the freedom to make other arrangements.

PubliCola: A lot of your arguments rely on the fact that gay couples already have all the rights and privileges of straight couples. So how did you vote on R-71 (the measure granting domestic partners all the rights of married couples)?

Backholm: I did not support Referendum 71. We all have many, many relationships in our lives, with our friends, and our neighbors, and our coworkers, and our family members that are meaningful to us in varying ways. But the meaningfulness of a relationship to the individuals involved is not what qualifies it as a marriage, and it would be a bizarre precedent that we would be establishing if we said that it was.

Therefore, marriage is about much more than whatever dynamics exist between two people from a public policy perspective. That the private reasons that people enter relationships has never had anything to do with why the state recognizes a relationship as a marriage.

?What that represents is something that we all intrinsically understand isn?t true.?

PubliCola: Just to clarify, then, you don?t support granting gays and lesbians all the rights and responsibilities of married couples?

Backholm: Sure, the ?everything but marriage? law, correct?I was not supportive of that law.

PubliCola: Can you point to any of the states where gay marriage is legal?say, in Massachusetts or New York or Vermont?and say that straight marriage has been eroded and hurt or affected by gay couples?

Backholm: That?s not the argument that we?re making. You know, my relationship with my wife or anybody?s relationship with their friends or their girlfriends or their spouses or whatever, is not, at the micro level, necessarily going to be affected by what happens.

But we?re making public policy, and we have to think about things from a broader perspective, not just two people?s lives. And what I?m confident of, and I think what the majority of the public will understand, is that if your public policy says that it?s not even desirable for a child to have a mother and a father, that an arrangement in which they don?t have their mother and father present in their lives is just as good as one in which they do, than our public policy shouldn?t say that. Because what that represents is something that we all intrinsically understand isn?t true, and therefore don?t really support regardless of the fact that we do think that people should have the freedom to make choices and live life as they see fit.

We?re not talking about two people. We?re talking about public policy. And when you make public policy you have to think in the aggregate. How does this affect our culture, how does this affect our state, how does it affect things a hundred years from now?

PubliCola: And so how does it affect our culture?

Backholm: If we were to take the position that there is no difference between a relationship in which a child had their mother and father present in their lives and one in which they don?t, that will have dramatic negative impact.

Think about it.? We would be telling every father and potential father that their presence is not specifically necessary in the lives of their child. Everyone knows that that?s not true, and our public policy shouldn?t say that that is true. Gay people have the right to form whatever relationships they want. They don?t have the right to redefine marriage and make it a genderless institution for everyone.

PubliCola: Are you saying a gay couple, say two women or two men, that have a child, that they are not capable of raising that child?

Backholm: Our public policy would be recognizing that it is preferable for a child to have a mother and father.

Efficient Strategies to Talk to a Roofer You have on Your Checklist

Simply with adequate money can you upgrade the decomposing roof structure of your home, and usually, it takes more than simply cash to ensure that the task will go efficiently. Roof covering materials, budget, style, layout, and contractors to hire are only several of the many facets of roofing projects that you have to take into account. Given that you'll absolutely require the services of a qualified roofer, you'll need to ask the proper questions to decide on the best man for the project.

How long have you been in the business?

Corporations that have been providing solutions to your area for several years are still there for a wise reason: they are well-established and fortified by their clients. Those that have been in the market for five years or more, despite the towering competition, have made it through by supplying excellent expertise. Efficient professionals have history with their clients and a long list of valued experience.

How many workers do you have?

When it comes to deciding on a roofing service provider, larger is not often better. Select a service provider that has enough employees to perform the project within the given time frame. Also, inspect if the roofing firm's building squad are insured, certified, and trained.

What form of roof do you propose?

If you reside within the Contra Costa County in California, hiring a close Danville or Concord roofing contractor will be simple. Having said that, identifying the "right" professional roofer requires more effort and time. Don't forget to check a professional's understanding by requesting for details pertaining to the roof he desires to set up on your home. A competent roofing contractor needs to have the ability to explain about the advantages of the manufacturer, the necessary roofing materials, as well as the fundamentals of ventilation.

What about the warranty?

A Danville roofing contractor can either provide you a manufacturer's warranty or a contractor's warranty. Reputable service providers usually ensure their craftsmanship for about a couple of years. If it's a manufacturer's warranty, ask if it encompasses both the materials and craftsmanship or just the materials.

Projects or repairs for roofing Danville CA homeowners must keep or boost their homes can be done by professional and competent roofing contractors. By asking the questions above, you'll be able to screen the excellent from the bad and employ a professional who can expertly deal with your home's roof. Reducing Waste at Home | c-win.net

Mondays are our trash day and as we were taking our recycling bins to the curb I realized how our trash fluctuates in amount from week to week. There have been weeks were we have an overloaded trash bin while on other weeks we barely fill it. This got me thinking, what can I do get to the point where my trash has to be picked up once a month?

?

Reduce Waste at Home

?

Where to start?

Right after your trash has been picked up, keep track of everything your waste. What does every member in your household throws away? What can be reused? What can be recycled? What can be repaired? What can be donated?

Now that you know what is thrown away at your house, start by to switch to a smaller garbage can or go from a weekly pick-up to an every other week pick-up (this is what we?ve done). You will soon see a change in your family?s waste because, well, who wants an overflowed stinky trash can in their house?

By switching pick-up dates you will also be saving money! It is way cheaper this way, and if you can, go for a monthly pick-up! This will save you even?more?money!

These are a few ideas to help you reduce waste at home:

?

Reduce Waste at Home

FOOD WASTE.

Compost.?Anything edible is compostable. Instead of throwing food waste to the trash or down the trash compactor, aka garburator in Canada, compost it. Washington has just started the pick up of food so it can be composted. Check if your state or city do this as well. And if you are a do-it-yourself-er check Survival Charter for tips on how to make your own compost. It is super easy!

Cook less. By this I am not inviting you to go eat out or buy fast food but simply to cook the right amount of food that you need. Learn to cook for one, for two, for all. If you have leftovers take them to work for lunch, have a leftover day. Try not to throw away any food.

Grow your own food.?If you have space, grow your own vegetables, herbs and spices! Be creative, use a windowsill to grow your herbs and spices they really don?t need that much space. A little goes a long way. By growing your own food you decrease the amount of plastic containers, plastic bags, etc that is thrown away.

?

Reduce Waste at Home

?

RECYCLE.

Grocery shopping.?Carry reusable bags with you. They are sturdier, can hold more than a plastic bag, and are washable! And they are inexpensive.

Refill and reuse. Instead of throwing away your bottles, refill them. Use spray bottles to water your plants or for your kids? crafts. Detergent bottles, after well washed, can be used as plant pots. Be creative.

Batteries. Buy rechargeable batteries.?Normal batteries are toxic. Plus, by buying?rechargeable?batteries, you are saving money as well!

Salvage and repurpose. There aare so many things that can be salvaged and reused: yogurt containers as pencil holders or plant pots; egg cartons for separating craft supplies or for a craft in itself; furniture can be fixed and given a new purpose. Be creative.

?

Reduce Waste at Home

?

AT HOME.

Water.?Drink from the tap or filtered water. Avoid bottled water (which is almost always tap water anyways).

Styrofoam. AVOID IT AT ALL COST! It is non-recyclable and non-decomposable. Styrofoam will survive the apocalypse along with cockroaches!

Paper towels.?Don?t leave at arms reach and use only when needed (like when making bacon). Instead use cotton cloths to clean your counter tops.

DIY.?Make your own cleaning rags from worn-out clothes or fabric scraps. My mom always did this and they lasted longer than your regular kitchen rag.

Cleaning supplies. Buy?concentrated?cleaners to reduce packaging waste.

Junk mail. And all mail for that matter if printed on only one side use the back side for your shopping list.

Boxes. These can be used for so many things! They can be used for storage, as play toys for your kids, as art canvases for children.

?
